A Japanese martial term associated with close-quarters combat and grappling, particularly methods developed for circumstances involving an armed opponent and the use of lighter armor or equipment.

lITERAL SENSE
Kogusoku literally means “small equipment” or “light armor/equipment.” In Japanese martial history, however, the term can also refer to systems or bodies of close-combat methods associated with fighting while equipped with weapons and forms of lighter armor.
Kogusoku should therefore not be understood simply as another historical name for unarmed Jujutsu. Its meaning is closely connected to the circumstances in which the methods were practiced. Depending on the ryū-ha, practitioners might work from positions in which weapons were carried, clothing or armor affected movement and gripping, and the encounter had already closed to a range where grappling became necessary.
Methods associated with kogusoku could include seizing, controlling, off-balancing, throwing, joint manipulation, and the use or control of weapons at close range. In some traditions, short weapons such as the tantō could play an important role in this environment.
As with terms such as kumiuchi and torite, kogusoku did not represent one universal Japanese fighting system. Its precise technical meaning and curriculum depended on the tradition, historical period, and context in which the term was used.
