Yawara

Historical martial terminology / close-combat tradition

Yawara is a Japanese reading of 柔, the character associated with ideas of softness, flexibility, and yielding. In Japanese martial history, yawara also came to be used as a term for systems or bodies of close-combat practice.

The word should not be interpreted to mean that these methods were necessarily gentle or passive. In a martial context, the concept of yawara can suggest adaptability—responding to force without relying exclusively on direct opposition and using positioning, timing, leverage, or changes in direction to gain advantage.

Historically, yawara was one of several terms used for martial practices that overlapped with what later became broadly known as Jujutsu. The precise meaning, however, depended on the period and ryū-ha in which the term appeared. It should not be assumed that every tradition using yawara taught an identical curriculum or used the term in exactly the same way.

This older terminology also helps explain the meaning of Jujutsu (柔術) itself. The jū in Jujutsu and the yawara discussed here are represented by the same character, 柔, connecting the later compound term to an older linguistic and conceptual vocabulary surrounding flexibility and adaptability.
