Kumiuchi

Historical martial method / close-combat terminology

Kumiuchi can be understood as “grappling together in combat” or “engaging and overcoming an opponent.” In Japanese martial history, the term has been used for forms of close-quarters combat in which opponents grappled for control, including encounters involving armed or armored warriors.

Kumiuchi should not be treated simply as an older Japanese word for modern wrestling. In a martial environment where weapons could be carried or already in use, gaining control of an opponent's body could be closely connected with controlling, drawing, retaining, or employing a weapon.

Depending on the period and tradition, methods associated with kumiuchi could involve seizing, off-balancing, throwing, restraining, or otherwise creating the position necessary to overcome an opponent. Armor, clothing, weapons, terrain, and the circumstances of the encounter could all influence how such close combat was approached.

The terminology and practices of Japanese close combat changed over time, and kumiuchi should not be treated as a single standardized martial system. It is better understood within the specific historical and martial context in which the term appears.
