Shinobi
(忍び)

A historical Japanese term for a person engaged in covert activities such as intelligence gathering, reconnaissance, infiltration, concealment, and other clandestine military operations. Shinobi is one of the principal historical terms for people later commonly called ninja. Mie University likewise distinguishes the historical shinobi from the increasingly fictionalized image associated with the modern word ninja.

lITERAL SENSE
Shinobi derives from shinobu (忍ぶ), a verb carrying senses associated with concealment, secrecy, and endurance. In historical military usage, shinobi came to designate people employed for covert activities, particularly entering enemy territory and gathering information.
The term appears in medieval historical records. The Taiheiki, compiled in the late fourteenth century, uses 忍 in describing a shinobi sent secretly into enemy territory to set fire to Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine. The early seventeenth-century Japanese-Portuguese dictionary also defines shinobi in connection with a spy who secretly enters enemy castles or encampments to gather information.
Importantly, shinobi was not the only historical designation for people performing these functions. Terminology varied by period and region, with terms including shinobi no mono, suppa, rappa, and others. The now-familiar word ninja became the dominant general term much later.
